Why a trauma therapist started a clean personal and home product brand

Lying awake at 2am, mind racing. Waking up tired no matter how many hours you slept. A body that won't fully power down, even when it's exhausted — always a little on edge, scanning, bracing for the next thing. Or maybe you don't feel much at all — just going through the motions.

And maybe it doesn't stop there. The tight chest. The snappiness. Chronic pain, emotional numbness, anxiety, the loss of motivation, the digestive stuff that never quite resolves. These aren't separate problems. They're one nervous system responding to a bucket that's too full.

If any of this sounds like you, here's what I most want you to know: you're not broken, and you're not imagining it.

I've spent over eleven years as a trauma therapist — trained in EMDR and Somatic Experiencing, approaches that work directly with the nervous system itself. Across more than 15,000 clinical hours I kept seeing the same thing: the bodies that couldn't rest, calm down, or feel joy were carrying emotional and chemical overload alike. And it taught me to see something most people are never told:

How everyday products add to your nervous system's load

That bucket isn't only emotional. It's chemical too.

Researchers have a name for this cumulative wear — allostatic load, the total burden a body carries from stress of every kind, emotional and physical alike. Your nervous system doesn't neatly sort one from the other. A hard conversation, a synthetic fragrance, a preservative your body doesn't recognize — each is one more input it has to process. For a system already running at capacity, every drop counts.

And here's the part almost no one connects: the products meant to make life cleaner, softer, better-smelling are quietly adding to the load. The fragrance in your laundry, the preservative in your lotion, the "fresh" in your air — many release compounds your body has to filter, defend against, and metabolize. Not dramatic poison. Just drip, drip, drip — one more thing your system is spending on, when it already has nothing to spare.

Here's what I wish more people understood: every input to your nervous system has to be processed, and processing takes energy. Not a metaphor — actual, finite energy your body has to spend. A hard conversation gets processed. A wave of anxiety gets processed. And so does every synthetic fragrance, every preservative, every chemical your body doesn't recognize. It all draws from the same account.

So most people aren't failing to thrive because something's wrong with them. They're not thriving because nearly everything they've got is already spoken for — going to process the stress, the emotions, and the chemical load, all at once. There's simply nothing left over.

Clean swaps that lighten the load

Now the good news, and the reason I'm telling you any of this: the chemicals you expose your body to are one of the few parts of the load you actually get to control. You can't always choose your stressors. But you can choose what you put on your body and bring into your home — and every swap lightens the load.

That's why I created Alchemē. Because what you put on your skin and use in your home shouldn't make you sick. You shouldn't have to compromise your health just to live your life. Alchemē makes clean, natural products that work with your body, not against it — nothing it has to decode, defend against, or recover from.

I can't take the hard conversations off your plate — that was never mine to carry. It's yours, and you're more capable of carrying it than you know. What I can do is put tools in your hands that lift a few drops out of the bucket, so your nervous system finally has room to do what it's been too taxed to do: settle, feel, rest, recover — so that you can come back to the people and the life in front of you.

You don't have to change everything at once. Even one product swap can make a difference.

The time to thrive is now. Own your health. Own your life.
